For me, on a busy week

If I am reading this on a day that feels busy and empty, this is the check.

The pleasure is the mess becoming something a person can see and name. Not being watched while I do it. Not a new idea for its own sake.

1. I love finding the real problem after a long struggle, and not stopping at the first explanation that sounds right.
2. I love repairing something already broken that people depend on, especially when the repair protects someone.
3. I love explaining it so simply that the next person can do it alone. I teach in order to learn the thing myself.
4. I love turning a mess into a structure someone else can hold.
5. I love doing the work carefully when nobody is checking. Being paid to sit idle was the work I disliked. A hard problem, worked hard, was the work I liked.
6. I love helping the person in the room with less power, including help I was not required to give. That has been the satisfying part of twenty years of work.

If the week is mostly persuading strangers, status reports, meetings, bookkeeping, or the same check repeated with nothing new to find, I have left this list. A good fee does not put me back on it.
